Do Toning Shoes Still Work?

Toning shoes were all the craze a while back. The promotors of these shoes made impressive claims for this type of shoe. Such promises ranged from encouraging weight reduction to getting rid of cellulite to toning the glutes to curing sore backs. These shoes had a rocker on the sole intended for increasing muscle activity to obtain those supposed benefits. Unfortunately, the evidence did not support the claims and there was a great deal of lawsuits from dissatisfied consumers and several companies were required to negotiate multi-million dollar agreements with the Federal Trade Commission.

Although all that is in the past there are still a few of these shoes on the market and they still do have some support from those who are informed about the footwear. Toning shoes can change the way that you move and for some individuals that could sometimes result in an improvement in some things like sore backs. At the same time, it may make some individuals with low back pain feel more painful. There is a lot of effort being directed at researching exactly what toning shoes do and exactly who can benefit from them and who might be harmed by them. Each person are going to react in different ways to them.

Podiatrists seem to particularly like these sorts of toning shoes due to the kind of patients that they see. The rocker sole nature of the footwear means they particularly helpful for those with a painful big toe joint, as with the footwear the big toe doesn’t have to move as much. However, while that may be helpful for that joint it will put more force on the ankle joint so could possibly create or make worse problems at the ankle joint. It was problems like this that led to the legal issues previously and need to be taken into consideration by anyone advising or using these shoes. They do have their uses and they can be helpful for the right individuals with the appropriate condition.
